This is not a book to read if you don't like gore. If you're a horror aficionado, though, it's your kind of read.The main character is Owen Thompson, a store manager who's rewarded for his work with a trip to a tropical island belonging to the owner of his company. He and other high-performing store employees show up expecting a week of killer parties and good times. For Owen, it's also a chance to face some inner demons from his wife's tragic death in the tsunami that devastated Thailand.
Unfortunately for Owen, personal growth has to take a back seat when he wakes up hung over the first morning and walks into a monster chewing on the body of one of the workers. From there on, Owen and two other survivors are forced to run and fight for their lives from the creatures while trying to figure out how to get off the (extremely isolated) island.
There is a similarity to zombies in the way the creatures are presented: They eat humans, they used to be human, and they lose all vestiges of their former personalities once created. They aren't slow or decaying, however. They're fast, strong and viciously intelligent. It shows in the way they handle their "food."
I could wish that the course of Owen's and Jessica's relationship hadn't been so easily predicted; with the early scenes that set up another of his acquaintances as a love interest, it was clear the author couldn't allow Owen and Jessica to walk off into the sunset together. But I have to admit that the way Owen ended their relationship was unexpected.
The book's ending was sufficiently difficult, and although the author glossed over a few details I would have liked explained more -- in particular, the exact cause of the transformation to monsters -- this was a good, entertaining horror read.

Meet Owen Decker. Owen lost his wife to a tsunami while they were vacationing in Thailand (they'd scrimped and saved for the vacation, natch). 10 months of therapy are beginning to help him heal . . . along with the friendship of a female co-worker. And things are beginning to look up. Owen has been invited by the CEO of the toy-store company for a week-long, all-expenses paid vacation to the CEO's tropical island because Owen is an awesome manager who gets. things. done.
He's a bit hesitant to go. After all, the island is surrounded by water, which he now fears due to his wife's death. But, at the urging of his doctor (face your fears, Owen, etc., etc.), Owen decides to accept his hard-earned reward, and he heads off to the tropical resort where he meets other successful managers who have also been invited and . . . well, you'll have to read the book to find out. But if you like gore, you won't be disappointed.
I read the book in one sitting. I wanted to see what would happen. So, why the three-star rating? Three reasons
(1) The writing sometimes falls into romance-novel/cop-drama narration that I find to be a bit cheesy. The writer assaults us with lines like, "Owen noticed she wore a light green shirt and denim shorts. Despite the [dangerous, totally life-threatening] situation, he found himself noticing the curve of her breasts and the muscular legs that held her up."
(2) The plot is surface-level and mostly consists of the main characters running back and forth across the island. The writing isn't detailed enough to really give the reader a sense of what's happening and what the terrain looks like. In addition, although the writer provides a good set-up (private, tropical island, badness afoot, etc.), he fails to deliver any specifics about WHY the badness is afoot.
(3) The ending is predictable and a lot is left unexplained.
An earlier reviewer compared this book to those by King an Koontz. I just don't see it. Yes, there's horror. Yes, there's gore. Yes, there's evil. But King, at least, gives us depth. His stories are rich with detail and backstory. This book lacks that.
If you love this genre, then add this to your collection. If you love Stephen King, reread a King novel. Otherwise, you might be left wanting.
NB I read the kindle version of the book. There were no problems with the formatting.
And perhaps should have. The descriptions were so lengthy I found myself skimming paragraphs until something of significance occurred. The characters spent more time running in endless attempts to find a way off the island with the lead character constantly remembering his dead wife it made Gilligan look like a genius. Fiction aside there needs to be some measure of probability to events and there were so many times in this book I found myself disgusted that I was still reading it. As a short story taking out all the fluff it would be worth reading. I cannot recommend this book to anyone, I'm sorry, it was just that long winded. I finished reading the book because I felt compelled to finish it, but it wasn't easy. This was found under zombie apocalypse novels, this is NOT a zombie read. I would classify it as horror. Read at your own risk.
If your standards for horror books are moderate to high, don't read this book.
I just finished the book and have no idea to what the title refers. I don't think it's some deep meaning--I think its title is meant to sound "cool". If it does have a significant meaning, it's never explained in the book.
The book needed a better editor. Can I write any better? No, but in addition to spelling mistakes, much of the narrative is clunky and repetitive.
Warning--MINOR spoilers The monsters in this book are former humans. You never find out exactly why the humans turn into monsters. I think the author came up with a silly idea, and because he couldn't explain it, he decided to ignore a definitive explanation entirely.
Here's a plot summary. Guy travels to island. People turn into monsters. He runs to the woods. He runs to the house. He runs to the woods. He runs to the house. He runs to the beach...And so on.
I didn't care too much for the characters. Their actions were oftentimes dopey. The monsters were nonsensical. And the book leaves too much hanging. Not in a clever, make-you-think-way. It's more like the author has as much clue as to what's going on as the reader does. So, I guess I should give this book one star--but I'll give it 2 since I've read worse.
